The research not only tries to explore the new value of the book, Written on Bamboo and Silk, as a carrier of an academic history, but also intends to bring in a new perspective for the history writing of books and libraries. Based on the archive of the University of Chicago Press, for the first time, the article presents the details of publishing Written on Bamboo and Silk, including the process of recommendation, review, design, printing, publishing and sales. In showing above details, the paper discusses different questions: How was the book accepted by the University of Chicago Press? How does the doctoral dissertation of Tsuen Hsuin Tsien become the known piece of Written on Bamboo and Silk? How to print a book with Chinese characters in Western countries? How to promote and sell an academic work? etc. The birth of this book no doubt should give the credit to the library circle and China studies circle in North America. Important figures from both circles are involved and play different roles in the publishing process, such as Howard W. Winger and Herrlee G. Creel as the referees, Carroll G. Bowen as the editor, Lester Asheim's financial assistance and especially, Lien sheng Yang as the significant peer reviewer. However, the success of the book has closer relationship with the academic group of China studies. The birth of Written on Bamboo and Silk and relevant monographs, such as Kung chuan Hsiao's Rural China:Imperial Control in the Nineteenth Century,reflect the influence of China studies development and transition at the time. Behind Written on Bamboo and Silk, we could see the revival of China studies and its expending network around the 1960s. In order to support the rise of China studies, there comes the needs for books or monographs, which could be used as textbooks for the growing student group of China studies, pushes western publishing system to accept the Chinese characters and builds a communication and exchange circles of China studies. 40 refs.
