Abstract:
Inscriptions on bones or tertoise shells are not at all the earlist Chinese characters.The pictographs carved onthe pottery of Dawenkou Culture remains are none other than the very sign of the appearance of Chinese character-s,being about the same time when the world s oldest Babylonian cuneiform characters and the hieroglyphic charac-ters of ancient Egypy appeared.It can be identified from the uses of bones and tortoise shells,the bronze wares.sources of materials.the manufacture and the features of form and structure as well that both the bones and tortoise shells and the bronze wares were not materials for writing.Thus the can not be called "books",the writing media for special purpose in Shang Dynasty(c.early 17th—11th century B.C.)were bamboo slips or wooden tablets.6 refs.
