| Shera had devoted all his life to the probe of the theory and practice of library
science.He founded a theoretical basis of library science-the social theory of cognition, to study the production，circulation,concardancy and consumption of the wide range of knowledge of the society.His theoretical ideologoy not only reflicts changes of reality but indicates future developments;not only intensifies the scientific nature of library science but bridges theorerically the gap between library science and information science. Shera's theoretical basis，ideological system and methods applied to scientific research have been to this day of instructive significance to us.30 refs.
