Abstract:
After the Sino-Japanese war of 1894, Japan had launched or participated into series of wars against China.During the war times, Japan had destroyed and plundered large amounts of book resources, which constitutes an important part of those wars.Based on the analysis and summary of the related literature, this paper aims at revealing the damage and destruction of those aggressive wars, and warning Chinese people that Japan's cultural aggression can not be ignored.
Because the collection, verification, systemization and utilization of historical materials are closely linked to the study of history, we think the activity of historical materials' arrangement is also part of the whole research process, and the compilations of historical materials should be regarded as research achievements.Firstly, we have gathered relevant historical materials, which include news reports, manuscripts, diaries, records of cultural institutions, and government records. The most important findings are 137 items of records from Nanjing Archives, Jiangsu Provincial Archives and the Second Historical Archives of China, and 62 articles about books being burnt or plundered by Japanese, which were once published in Bulletin of the Library Association of China. Those original records contain lots of details about the destroyed and plundered books, and offer great reference value to investigators.Secondly, we also have collected many historiographies and classified them into three groups. The latter half of the paper is literature review. The research papers mainly come from three areas:1)the history of colleges and universities or local chronicles,2)the history of libraries,3)the history of cultural education during the Anti-Japanese War.Those papers document how many books belonged to public libraries, school libraries, cultural institutions and private bibliophiles be ruined and plundered, and how those books were destroyed and plundered by Japanese. With the developments of research on the history of Anti-Japanese War since 1980s, the history of Japan's plundering of books and literature from China has attracted researchers' interest. The research papers grow fast, and this field is becoming mature gradually.Generally speaking, because the history of Japan' cultural aggression is very complicated, investigators have different researching preference.According to the analyses of the above literature, we summarize five significant issues of current studies as follows:1)time and territory of plundering, 2)organizations of plundering, 3)methods of plundering, 4)the losses of books, 5)preservation activities for books. There is no doubt that each topic can prove that Japan had brought severe damage and negative influence to China's librarianship.
The innovation and practical significance of the study is:1)by clearing up all the historical facts, the paper makes an three-steps framework of the history of Japan's books plundering in China; 2)the archival materials collected by the authors provide strong evidence support to the paper and also certificate archival researching is the basic approach to research. In addition, the paper studies the characters and functions of different kinds of historical materials and how to use them. This will persuade investigators to find more original records and use them in the future research; 3) this review may build a good base for ongoing studies and facilitate further studies in this field.
However, the paper does not collect and assimilate Japanese papers and historical materials enough because of language and access problems.Of course, if we want to make a detailed bibliography of destroyed and plundered books in the future, investigators have to collect more records, documents and literatures.3 tabs.51 refs.
