Abstract:
Since 2009,Little Free Libraries (LFL for short) started in the United States and set off a wave of book sharing around the world The rise of this movement is directly related to the tradition of American charity culture and the spread of book desert In more than 10 years of development,LFL (Little Free Library,hereinafter referred to as LFL,a non profit organization that promotes LFL) has adopted the form of social enterprise organization and has developed rapidly with simple methods and clear concepts The movement was appreciated by the mainstream media and library community.
Academic research shows that:1) The movement has the positive significance of encouraging book sharing, promoting community building, and promoting grassroots charity activities and fighting against capitalism;2) The movement has the problem of pursuing commercial interests, the unreasonable geographical layout, the questionable participants goals, affecting intellectual freedom, and doing nothing to solve social problems;3) The movement should make use of urban planning theory and technology, and strengthen cooperation with public libraries to achieve better development.
In-depth thinking about the LFL movement shows that:1)The combined effect of economic factor (income inequality) and political factor (neoliberalism) caused the spread of book desert;2) LFL movement needs to learn from operation mode of Carnegie Library, pay attention to LFL owners and book resources, and think about the organization's own construction;3) Public libraries should cooperate with LFL movement, grasp the general tone of public welfare, and pay attention to social issues;4) Fundamentally solving book desert needs participation of the whole society led by government52 refs.
