was the special status of the Boone Library School, and Central China College intended to not
only fully control it but also restrict its development. The Boone Library School was originally
a branch of the Central China College, while it continued to operate during the period when
Central China College was closed. In 1929, the Boone Library School was registered separately
with the Ministry of Education. Despite of that, the Boone Library School and Central China
College still had an intention to amalgamate after the reopen of Central China College. However,
substantial divergence of opinions arose when both parties discussed the outstanding issues caused
by the suspension of the College and the future development plan of the Boone Library School.
Especially, the intention of the Boone Library School to award degrees to graduates in 1930 and
to open Intermediate Course of Library Science was not accepted by Central China College. Some
teachers and students of the College showed rejection and even discrimination against the students
of the School. Although the board of directors of the Boone Library School had decided to operate
independently, the School remained unstable, and Central China College still had the intention to
merge the Boone Library School.
It was by this unpublished will that Miss Wood expressed her strong wills to those in need to
know, and her will was executed to a certain extent in a certain period of time. On one hand, it
helped Boone Library remain a public library and continue to serve more people, and protected
the public library spirit developing in the Chinese society. On the other hand, it helped the Boone
Library School get rid of the constraints from Central China College and stay away from the
power struggle of various churches which controlled the College, and also solidified the economic
foundation of the School for future development. This will, reflecting Miss Wood’s character
and morals, had become a guardian of the achievements of her pursuit of ideal, hard work and
dedication of her entire life. It had made the world to see the strength of librarians, and led the
professional value orientation of contributing to the society for librarians.
