KE Ping / Ideological system of library science in China: abstraction, core and value 029

from Za Chao (excerpts from various books) in the Tang Dynasty and Reading Schedule in
the Yuan Dynasty to List of Books and List of Western Studies in modern times as well as book
recommendation of studies of Chinese ancient civilization. The above laid the foundation for the
library reading guidance that integrated thoughts and knowledge. In addition, the idea of reading
guidance in ancient times was closely related to book gathering and collecting. Rules On Book
Collecting in Dan Sheng Tang by QI Chenghan included On Book Gathering, On Book Collecting
and On Book Reading, the three of which supplemented each other.
The idea of reading guidance in library science is of great significance to the reading theory
and practice of modern library science, and even to the nationwide reading. The third generation
of librarians made great efforts to establish a theoretical system composed of reading, reading
psychology, reading culture and so on.
In addition to theories of book value, book organization, book collecting and utilization as
well as library building in ancient library science concluded by JIANG Yongfu [28] , the ideas of
classification and reading guidance in ancient library science were closely related to knowledge
and education respectively, which were further enriched and developed in modern period and
should be given great attention. In the ideological system of library science in China, the ideas of
classification and reading guidance are of special significance. It not only plays a key leading role
in the fields of collection development and user service in applied library science but also plays an
underlying role in the basic theory and application theory of theoretical library science.

               2 Core

The above analysis indicated that the ideological system of library science in China originated
from abstraction of practice, objects, academic culture and related disciplines. The thoughts of
essential elements, collection and utilization, book culture, dissemination, classification and
reading guidance are only basic ideas of the ideological system.
The ideological system of Chinese library science was established by inheriting the thoughts
of Chinese ancient library science and absorbing the thoughts of western modern library science
as well as integrating with the development of Chinese society and librarianship. The ancient
library science system, based on ancient library science thoughts, was a subsystem of collation and
bibliography, including book collecting methods and theories, book culture, library culture and
history of book collecting. The modern library science system was based on modern library science
thoughts. After YANG Zhaozhe proposed “pure library science” and “applied library science” [2]10
                                                                                      [29]
and LI Jingxin proposed “historical library science” and “systematic library science” , library
                                                                                            [30]
science was divided into two branches (theoretical library science and applied library science) ,
                                                                                         [31]
three branches (theoretical library science, special library science, applied library science) and
four branches (general library science, special library science, comparative library science and
applied library science by WU Weici and other scholars [32] , theoretical library science, special
