Leibniz’s idea of library management . Moreover, it established an ideological system of library
science with both profound cultural heritage and extensive knowledge, which is enough to make
contemporary librarians build stronger self-confidence.
In 1925, LIANG Qichao proposed to “construct Chinese library science” at the founding
assembly of the China Society of Library Science. In the past nearly one hundred years, Chinese
librarians have explored a way fit for the development of Chinese libraries. In the early 20th
century, we learned from Western countries such as Europe and the United States, and in the
1950s and 1960s, we learned from Soviet Union. After the reform and opening-up, western library
science was introduced to China again. Through the painstaking trials of three generations of
modern Chinese librarians, passive acceptance has been transformed to actively seeking exchange
and cooperation; simply adhering to traditions or rejecting the influence has been transformed
to the dialectical combination of thoughts of both Chinese library science and foreign library
science. Therefore, the ideological system of library science with Chinese characteristics has been
formed. Under the guidance of the system, library science has developed from pre-science stage
to conventional science through two ideological revolutions, that is from practical experience to
methodology and theoretical cognition and then to scientific abstraction.
Today, taking the opportunity of constructing the discipline system, academic system and
discourse system of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics, the historical
responsibility and mission of developing the Chinese school of library science and disseminating
Chinese thoughts and Chinese voices to the world library communities fall on the shoulders of the
new generation of librarians.
