Abstract:
Starting from the general concepts of metadata in digital libraries, the author analyzes the requirements of metadata interoperability environment for the design and application of metadata, discusses some principles in the open design of metadata (such as modularization, extensibility, distributedness and recursiveness), and describes the basic frameworks of open metadata applications and mechanisms of application protocols. 2 figs. 28 refs.
