closely related to the library,even some of the digital libraries are regarded as digital humanities
projects. On the essence of discipline,both Library Science and digital humanities originated
in the practice,some of them coming from the practice of information services. In the field of
practice,the library and the digital humanities are both concerned with the research and practice of
the recorded information and text.
Finally,the paper puts forward that the libraries in China need a much broader perspective to
study library and digital humanities,create a friendly digital humanities environment,and establish
an effective organization and management and so on,to explore digital humanities theory and
practice.

A macro-level analysis of China’s library scholar research

In the past one hundred years,China’s librarianship has developed and thrived from scratch and
has been widely accepted as an independent discipline within the academia,owing to the strenuous
efforts made by generations of Chinese library scholars. One of the best ways to pay tribute to
these great predecessors is to inherit their academic legacy and study their lives and thoughts.
China’s library scholar research commenced in the 1930s and has a history of over 80 years.
Summarizing the 80 years’ history contributes to promoting the study of library scholars,deepening
the discipline memory of Library Science and carrying forward the library spirit. In this article,the
Chinese library scholars refer to the scholars who were born in China and received the professional
education in Library Science,and those foreigners who made great contributions to modern
China’s librarianship(such as Mary Elizabeth Wood).
With regard to research perspective,the author chooses only the research results done from
the perspective of Library Science,therefore it should be pointed out that for Liu Yizheng,Wang
Xiantang and other scholars who have rich library work experience but whose main research field
is not Library Science,this paper only concerns their research from the perspective of Library
Science. In terms of regions,the paper mainly selects relevant research results in inland of China；
Hong Kong and Taiwan and overseas research,although involved,is not elaborated on. Because of
the large number of people involved in the study of Library Science and the voluminous research
literature,only the important research systematic results(especially the monographs,doctoral
dissertation)and the representative ones which can reflect the characteristics of a certain stage or a
range of research are chosen,the so-called macro-level analysis.
The library scholar research in China has experienced four periods:the beginning
stage(1930s),the tortuous development stage(1950s to 1970s),the recovery and development
