Library science education, information science education and archival science education have
been independently created and developed, and integrated in 1998. We have walked a path of
sticking to mainstream majors and actively expanding into new fields. Secondly, whether the
units of library, information and archives management education are established separately or
in the department of history, literature, management, or library entity, they have undergone on
average 3.77 times of renaming of departments’ or schools’ names. At present, most education
units use the name of information management or information resources management, which
has lasted for a longer time. Thirdly, after hundreds of years of precipitation and development in
China’s library, information, and archives management education, although the size of faculty in
total is still small, it has formed a relatively stable, constantly updated group of well-educated
professionals, a low degree of internationalization, and an insufficiently optimized academic
structure. The issue deserves attention. Fourthly, the scale of undergraduate training among
students in library, information and archives management education in China is larger than that
of masters and doctors, but in terms of the number of degrees awarded, it comes to the reality
of the transition from cultivating undergraduate students in the initial period to the main stage
of cultivating master students. The employment directions for undergraduates, masters and
doctors are mainly about signing an employment agreement or chasing for higher degrees. The
proportion of graduates who choose to start their own business is not high. Finally, the paper
proposes several directions in the development of library, information, and archives management
               education in China.

The library is a growing organism; the information technology and social demand are important
forces for the growth of the library. The future library will have important changes in resource
construction, development form, service ability, librarian positioning and so on because of the
forces. The future library needs to shoulder the new mission and play the irreplaceable role in
innovation of science and technology, performance of national strategy, inheritance of culture,
popularization of science and leading disciplines. New requirements are put forward for the library
profession to undertake such a mission; the library science education should be reorganized by
forward-looking thinking to meet the new professional requirements, and the theoretical analysis
and practical ability of the library science talents are constantly improved. This paper makes a
comprehensive consideration of the mission of library in the new era and the education of library
