science in the future from three aspects: the future library, the mission of library and the education
of library science.
The library will develop into a new form of digital, virtual, mobile and intelligent service with
comprehensive integration and seamless connection of resources in the future. The ability of the
library is not only to provide literature service, but also to serve the national strategy. The scope
of resource construction will be significantly expanded; traditional literature resources, thematic
network resources and user experience resources will be unified in the integration framework of
digital resources and solve the practical problems of users by making semantic correlation and
disclosure; it will mainly be reflected in the digitalization of resources, the virtualization of forms
and the mobility of use in the form of library; the literature service is upgraded to the wisdom
service; the limitation of literature and information service for the whole people will be broken
through the library, and the national strategic service will be expanded; the librarian who has
both subject knowledge and professional skills will be positioned as the “know it all” of subject
development.
The technological innovation, the cultural quality improvement of the whole people, the
inheritance of historical culture, the promotion of popularization of science and the development
of disciplines are five important missions of the library in the future. In order to fulfill this mission,
the library in the future should perform the unique function of knowledge service in scientific
literature and intellectual property, highlight the social status advantage in the promotion of
cultural reading and the construction of cultural power, show the professional skills of information
organization in the protection of ancient books and the inheritance of historical culture, give full
play to resources and platform in carrying out science popularization activities and promoting the
popularization of science, and reflect the comprehensive ability of librarians in subject knowledge
and professional skills which helps teaching and research activities and leading the development of
subjects.
The cultivation of library science professionals in the future must master the theory and methods
of library science under the new resource environment, pay attention to the cultivation of library
resource construction and organization ability, strengthen the cultivation of librarians’ senses of
mission and ability, improve the ability of resource acquisition and analysis under the big data
environment, and take the practice in the library as a required course.
In a word, library, library profession and library science education must go hand in hand with
the times. The development of three aspects should be positioned in facing the public, facing the
profession, facing the decision-making and helping the country strategy. This is the new mission
given to library by history. Therefore, librarians must remain true to their original aspiration, keep
their mission firmly in mind and sheer endeavor.
