Initiative, the funds of the first-class universities increase rapidly, and a group of Ten Billion Club
universities comes out. With the rapid development of universities, however, academic library
is facing the new challenges of the lack of funds, librarians and readers. In order to analyze the
current problems of academic library, formulate solution and promote the construction of first class
academic library, this article uses the methods of statistical survey and data analysis to research
the problems of first-class academic libraries in funds, librarians and student reading with all
kinds of official public statistics. The findings of this article include that the proportion of first
class academic library funds in the university funds is about 0.5% and has been declining, and
there is a great gap compared with the proportion of 2% of the world first-class academic libraries.
Because of financial constraints and inflation, the purchasing power of information resources of
academic libraries declines year by year and is difficult to catch up with that of the world first-class
academic libraries. The numbers of academic librarians and staff declines year by year as well; the
proportion of academic librarians in university students is about 1:300. Professional librarians are
insufficient, and librarian’s working time is too long and workload is too heavy. The borrowing
rate of university library keeps declining, less than 40 books borrowed by undergraduates in 4
years. The amount of paper based reading of university students is insufficient, and the number
digital reading is in fact an illusion.
In conclusion, this article suggests that academic libraries in China should focus on solving the
current problems, return to common sense of higher education, professionalism and responsibility
of academic library so as to meet the challenge of the New Era. Academic library in China should
promote the reform of personnel system in university library, increase the numbers of academic
librarians, enhance the professionalism of academic library, adopt positive strategy to attract
students as much as possible, promote student reading, and improve academic library service level
in an all-round way.
