SHAO Bo, SHAN Zhen & WANG Yi / Construction of smart libraries with new generation service platforms: 037
Business reengineering and data management
Interface launched the Sierra Services Platform in 2012, and the 2.0 version in 2015(Breeding,
2015). In September 2014, the library of Huazhong University of Science and Technology
introduced Sierra as the management system. In 2014, OCLC launched WMS based on its own
information sharing system (J. LI, X. L. ZHANG, & YANG, 2017). In 2016, the FOLIO project
was launched(XIAO, LIN, & CHEN, 2018). On April 26, 2019, NLSP was officially released in
Nanjing University as the result of the second phase construction of smart library.
The release of the new generation library service platforms has reshaped the library’s business
module and service module. It adopts the micro-service framework to provide libraries with various
forms of processes in resource procurement and management. The new generation platforms also
provides a metadata management environment suitable for various types of library resources, and
integrates knowledge discovery services or supports independent discovery interfaces by providing
interoperability protocols. The key feature of the service mode of the new generation platforms
is the unified management of the central knowledge repository and the integration of knowledge
services (see Figure 1).
Figure 1. Functional mechanism of the NLSP platform
(1) Management of the central knowledge repository
The central knowledge repository is a standard resource data center based on multiple supplier
sources, linked to local library resources, which in turn addresses issues such as professional
linked data, link resolution and metadata update for the resources. It can provide a unified
metadata management platform for print, digital and electronic resources, realize centralized
module management, solve the problem of data integration between heterogeneous platforms,
and provide support for library’s further resource guarantee and discipline services. On this basis,
resource acquisition, resource development and resource management in libraries will change
significantly.
