Jin, YUWEN Gongliang, ZHU Derun and ZHENG Yuanyou, which indicated that the manuscript
was circulated in the Song and Yuan dynasties. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties it was collected
by YUAN Zhongche, XIANG Zijing and LIANG Qingbiao successively, and then the Imperial
Household Department of the Qing Dynasty incorporated it into the imperial storehouse stamping
“Shi Qu Bao Ji” on it. After the Qing Dynasty collapsed, the manuscript was taken away from the
Imperial Palace. Later it was bought in Hong Kong and collected by the NLC.
HUANG Tingjian, contemporary of SIMA Guang, participated in the revision of Zizhi Tongjian.
He had seen many manuscripts and concluded the characteristics of SIMA Guang’s handwriting,
“the regular script (kai shu) is not perfect, but the clerical script (li shu) is quite standard and
vigorous”. The script of the Manuscript of Zizhi Tongjian combines the regular script and the
clerical script, which corresponds to HUANG’s comment.
