difficulty”. On February 2nd, 1949, Hong said in another letter to his son: “I live a clean life and
never let anyone down, so I stay calm. I believe in karma, so I act as usual even when delightful.
That is my philosophy.” He was transferred to East China Normal University Library after
liberation, working as an operational guidance at first, without administrative rank. He, 60 years
old, carried and shelved books by himself for many years.
The famous library scientist Liu Guojun once met Hong Fanwu in 1917, he wrote in Mourning
Mr. Hong Fanwu venerably: “I enter Library Science because of Mr. Hong’s guidance.” Student
of Southeast University education department, Hu Jiajian, who had once taken up the post of
Central University Procurator, lived in Hong Kong after 1948 and acted as manager and chairman
of Hong Kong Zhongshan Library for 21 years. In the 100th anniversary of Hong’s birth, 90 years
old Hu Jiajian, inspired and guided by Hong Fanwu, wrote an article to commemorate Hong,
recalling the days meeting with Hu Shi and Hong (J. J. Hu, 1993).
Shi Tinyong worked at university libraries (Southeast University, Tsinghua University, and
Central University) followed Hong Fanwu. He gathered abundant experience in practice, and
had outstanding contributions to ancient books collation, bibliography index compiling, version
identification, etc. When he was director of Chinese books cataloging of Tsinghua University
Library, with the support of Hong, he improved the Chinese library classification, and compiled
National Tsinghua University Library series subheading title index, leaving precious documents
for Tsinghua University Library. After the victory of the War, he was employed by Hong in Central
University Library, taking charge of Chinese books catalogue.
Zhu Jiazhi, poor from his childhood, studied liberal arts part-time in Jinling University.
Hong went abroad in 1919 and recommended Zhu Jiazhi for a part-time job at Nanjing
Higher Normal School. In 1920, Zhu graduated and worked as a full-time librarian. When Hong
returned to work at Southeast University Library as director, he devoted great efforts to reform the
university library. Zhu became Hu’s right-hand man since he had solid foundation for Chinese and
western language and he was familiar with library operation.
In 1952, with the adjustment of colleges all over the country, Nanjing University merged with
the Arts School and Sciences School of Jinling University, and relocated on the site of the former
Jinling University. Shi Tingyong acted as deputy director in charge of library operation in Nanjing
University Library later. The engineering departments of Nanjing University, Jinling University
and some other colleges have been integrated as Nanjing Institute of Technology (Southeast
University), which was established on the site of the former Central University. Zhu Jiazhi was
deputy director in charge of library operation in Nanjing Institute of Technology Library then.
Besides, Jin Pingshu, Zhou Zongwei, Cao Zujie and others had ever received guidance and aids
from Hong Fanwu, had successively became directors of some university libraries in Nanjing and
played their roles in library development.
