4 Conclusion

Hong Fanwu experienced quite a few important historical periods, such as Xinhai Revolution,
the May 4th Movement, the Anti-Japanese War, Liberation War, the founding of new China. As a
student assistant at the very beginning, he gradually became a main activist of early Chinese library
movement and a famous library scientist, who devoted all his life to the Chinese library cause.
Hong Fanwu kept working on library field for more than forty years and he never interrupted
his library research and career. His ideas and practices were enriched with time. This article makes
an elaboration upon Hong’s thoughts about library organization and management, classification
research and literature exchange. This article also makes a summary of Hong’s library practices,
such as the construction of Southeast University Library’s new building and the expansion of
Tsinghua University Library’s building, and his efforts on enriching library collections, cataloguing
and library openness, services, rules and regulations. We also make a discussion on Hong’s
remarkable contributions to the modern library undertaking of China from the aspects of education,
talents cultivation, guiding and supporting younger scholars, and other social activities.
The year of 2013 was the 120th anniversary of Hong Fanwu’s birth. This article concludes the
great contributions he made for Chinese library undertaking, with the hope that librarians carry
forward his spirit, his life-time devotion, love and loyalty to librarianship.
