it brings along.
(1) Break the resource framework of traditional libraries
Big data has brought us to a broader data space. Digital libraries now need to cope with not
just books, journals, and other literatures, but also the wide variety of information on the Internet.
Assorted demands of digital library users trigger the changes in data acquisition, processing,
organization and services. We must construct a new framework for digital library resources, bear
in mind the concept of full database, and build a full database framework for digital libraries.
Thus digital libraries will include literature resources and resources from the whole network. This
framework of digital libraries will have resources like text formatted information, as well as image
and video formatted information. From the perspective of information collection, in addition to the
traditional ordering, we should take automatic means to acquire information from network. From
the perspective of information organization, we shall establish an organization framework with
semantic relations and close inter-data connections.
(2) Establish a comprehensive service concept
Traditional library services are passive, basically based on materials. Digital libraries have
expanded service resources, greatly enriched library resources through various databases,
and changed passive service form to self-service form. But from the angle of the big data era,
further enhancements are still needed in the service concept of digital libraries, to achieve a
comprehensive service concept. Firstly, they should provide services to the whole society,
including those digital libraries of universities and research institutes with content of their own
copyright. Secondly, they should provide full resource services, namely various information
resource types, such as literatures, databases, Internet information, videos, analysis information,
policies and regulations, government information, etc.. Thirdly, they should further expand the
service modes and propagation forms, which consist of user self-service, short reply, notification,
and personalized service, and build virtual reference and consultation platform which can converse
with users through fixed network and mobile network.
(3) Expand the focus of work
The focus of digital libraries should be expanded in the big data era. Besides the fundamental
work in digital resource construction, they must improve service capability. They continue
with regular services, at the same time add certain high-end services to take responsibilities of
information analysis. They shall pay close attention to frontier disciplines, track major national
scientific research proposal fields or local key research areas, provide scientific research progress
reports, and provide data support for government administration, scientific decisions, and scientific
researches.
(4) Find the position of digital librarians
The big data era also puts forward higher requirements on digital librarians. Every librarian
should have a comprehension and analysis ability on data, and endeavor to become a data analyst.
They should have a certain level of understanding to big data technologies, not necessarily create
