Core knowledge and developing directions for library, information and
archives studies: Review on Young Scholar Salon 2019

The paper reviews the presentations on core knowledge and developing directions in the field of
library, information and archives studies from thirty-nine young scholars in the 2019 New Year
Salon. From the young scholars’ points of view, the field of library, information and archives
produces ideologies, methodologies and technologies about how to collect, record, preserve,
organize, retrieve, access, analyze and utilize different sorts of data, information and knowledge
for human beings, and devotes to manage the full life cycle of information resources. The paper
finally sums up the developing dilemma of the field proposed by young scholars. For example
the library, information and archives studies are currently facing the identity crisis, whose
status is still not very satisfying, and the contradiction between the field and the stakeholders
is attracting their eyes. The paper highlights the possible developing directions; condensing
the connotation of the field, and expanding the original border; inheriting the core knowledge,
innovating the theoretical system; strengthening the practice orientation, keeping up with the
national strategies. Young scholars should take the initiative to put responsibilities on shoulders.

A new view on ancient Chinese movable type printing (Ⅰ)

The inventor, the invention time and place of the movable type printing have been the hot topic
in the academic community. This article discusses the following issues: Was there movable
type printing earlier than Bi Sheng? Was there wooden movable type printing earlier than Wang
Zhen? Was the movable type printing the mainstream in ancient China? What are the limitations
and optimal scope of application of ancient Chinese movable type printing? What are the
differences between ancient Chinese, ancient Korean and Gutenberg’s movable type printing in
Europe?`
The technique of movable type printing is exactly the same with imperial seals which was
discovered and applied in the pre-Qin times. “秦陶量”, “秦公簋”, “能原镈”, “攻敔王夫差剑”
and “ 簋”, etc were all mud molded with moveable type and casted. Bi Sheng’s contribution
is making moveable type with clay and improving typesetting. Wooden moveable type was not
