application, as well as from the perspectives of research fields, research institutions or research
results. In practice, a number of digital humanities research institutions with the support of colleges
and universities as well as data infrastructure construction institutions with the support of libraries
have emerged, and produced some influential practical and academic results.
Derived from “humanities computing”, digital humanities is based on humanities data and
makes advantage of computing technology as an effective auxiliary and service means to help
researchers improve the processing efficiency of humanistic corpus. In the intersection with
traditional humanities, “humanities computing” gradually transformed from a simple tool to the
interdisciplinary integration of information technology and humanities, and further developed

into a new discipline—digital humanities , which integrates multiple fields and has independent
professional practice, research methods, research standards and theoretical values. The emergence
and development of digital humanities is not only the process of the evolution of computer
technology and methods into the new research paradigm, but also the practical extensional need
of traditional humanities. In China, digital humanities, as an emerging discipline, is also an
indispensable new force to boost the development of the new liberal arts.
With the increase of digital humanities projects and research results, the evaluation of digital
humanities results begins to enter researchers’ vision. How to evaluate the results of digital
humanities has become a new topic in the academic field. The emergence and development of
digital humanities depend on three dimensions: discipline, professionalism and technicality.
From the perspective of discipline, digital humanities has the characteristics of humanities and
interdisciplinary characteristics. From the perspective of professionalism, the theory and methods
of the discipline of library, information and archives furnish the professional foundation for digital
humanities research. From the technicality point of view, the development and application of
digital technology and intelligent analysis tools are essential factors to promote the development of
digital humanities. The above characteristics make discipline, professionalism and technicality the
three main dimensions of digital humanities evaluation.

1 Three dimensions and development stages of digital humanities

1.1 Three dimensions of digital humanities: discipline, professionalism and technicality

In order to demonstrate the development context and characteristics of digital humanities more
clearly, the author took “数字人文” (digital humanities in Chinese), “人文计算” (humanities
computing in Chinese), “Digital Humanity”, “digital Humanities” and “Human Computing” as
the keywords and searched them in the Chinese Academic Journals (Online) database (CAJD) and
Web of Science (WoS) core collection database (up to 2020-12-31). As a result, 1, 180 and 10, 969
literatures at home and abroad were obtained after selection. Through in-depth analysis of subjects
