document carriers and information dissemination in the initial stage of human civilization have been
gradually formed, becoming the most important and the most basic elements of the origin of human
civilization, imposing a significant impact on the development trend of the library. Therefore, while
discussing the development trend of information civilization and libraries, this paper first traces the
pre-information period of civilization, analyzes the relations between the civilization elements of
ancient information and the development of the library, including the change of document carriers,
the change of information communication, and the function of the library as a place to store books
and as the information warehouse in the pre-information period of civilization, and then discusses the
influence of document carriers, printing and etc. on the development of libraries.
The third part of this paper focuses on the origin and development of information civilization and
the continuous innovation of the library. It divides the innovation into four stages of development.
The first is library automation；the second is digital library；the third is Internet(mobile Internet),
and the fourth is the influence of artificial intelligence on the innovation and development of the
library.
The fourth part of this paper focuses on the prosperity and transformation of information
civilization and the construction of new civilization in urban libraries. It probes into how to
construct a new civilization of city libraries, including information civilization, historical
civilization, urban civilization, ecological civilization and world civilization. In this comprehensive
new civilization integrating five elements, the information civilization and history civilization
mainly reflect the view of civilized time view；city civilization and the world civilization mainly
reflect the civilized space concept；ecological civilization reflects the civilized development view.
The information civilization will become the bridge and link for the new civilization, and the engine
and life artery of the new civilization. This new vision of the Chinese city libraries will contribute to
the Chinese cultural process in the era of information civilization, and provide Chinese wisdom and
Chinese scheme for the innovation and development of the world city libraries.

Librarianship in theoretical perspective

As a platform of academic communication, the Journal of Library Science in China has
provided us the chance of observing, researching and commentating the history, status quo and
future of librarianship over the past 60 years’ development in the People’s Republic of China.
Several special years were chosen to review and analyze the important events and reforms in the
development of Chinese librarianship. Unable to present a comprehensive picture as it is, this
paper can at least draw a general timeline of development of librarianship.
