LI Guihua & LIU Jing / Transition: Adolescents’ hybrid reading in the omnimedia era 081
2.3 Reliability and validity analysis
It was shown that the Cronbach alpha coefficient in this questionnaire was 0.94, which reached a
high confidence level.
The data of this study mainly take a descriptive method to carry out analysis, and ensure the
effectiveness level of the study through various measures. First, we carried out large sample survey
and controlled the sample structure, which ensure the external validity of the survey. Second, 15
members participate in the questionnaire design. What’s more, we improve the content of the
questionnaire through multiple rounds of interview survey and pre-test questionnaire. Third, the
data analysis of the significance of the test (involving card inspection, F-test, contour coefficients,
etc.) makes the study have a high standard validity.
3 Analysis of situation and pattern of hybrid reading behavior of young adults
3.1 The current situation of hybrid reading behavior of young adults
3.1.1 Description of the basic conditions of hybrid reading behavior of young adults
The data of our survey shows that the young adults in China has shown clear complex reading
characteristics.
First, the composite choice of electronic and paper books has become the mainstream choice
of young people. About 61.85% of young adults said they liked both paper books and electronic
books, while 31.62% said they preferred the paper version to the electronic version, while only
4.65% preferred the electronic version to the paper version. This means that e-books and paper
books are not opposing choices for most young adults, the combination of the two is the main
choice of reading behavior of young adults in the omnimedia era.
Second, the concept of “Reading + socialization” promotes the multi-understanding and deep
experience of reading value among young adults, and enhances the level of interest in reading
among them. The data shows that 22% of young adults had participated in reading community
activities, while an analysis of “like reading” and “reading community participation” shows that
young adults who had participated in reading community activities were more likely to “love
reading”.
Third, the wide application of mobile reading tools makes virtual space and real space coupling
situation in fragmented form. Young adults are willing to use fragmented time to read. More than
68% of young adults said they “often read books on mobile devices such as mobile phones, iPads”
and more than 65% said they “often use fragmented time to read while travelling in transport
and waiting in line”. The development of technology and its products have become the important
material basis for the development of hybrid reading.
