2017). Accordingly, we proposed the sixth hypothesis as follows.

Hypothesis 6 (H6). Socio-demographic variables such as gender, age, occupation, education level, and
household income of rural residents significantly influenced their recognition of CBP.

            2.2 Model construction

The quality of cultural products (services) supplied by CBP and the strength of individual residents’
motivation determine the approval of CBP by rural residents. In particular, motivation is different
from demand and it is a psychological motivation with specific goals and objects based on specific
needs. Since the approval is about a specific rural CBP, we use motivation rather than demand.
However, both influencing factors are difficult to quantify objectively with specific qualities,
so we need to reconstruct the theoretical model. 1) The intensity of motivation is influenced by
how badly rural residents demand cultural participation and the external environmental factors
of availability and accessibility of services in other areas. Bourdieu’s cultural capital theory and
other scholars’ studies related to cultural participation (Bourdieu, 1984; Christin, 2012; Willekens
& Lievens, 2016) suggest that individuals’ social attributes, cultural capital, and economic capital,
which can be measured by constructing corresponding demographic variables, determine their
cultural participation needs. While urban areas have better public cultural services than rural areas,
distance to the city affects rural residents’ convenience of using urban public cultural services as
an alternative. The distance to the urban areas affects the convenience of urban public cultural
services as an alternative (LIANG & ZHANG, 2018; Kraaykamp, Van Gils, & Ultee, 2008).
2)The quality of supply can be measured by rural residents’ degree of satisfaction with CBP,
including satisfaction evaluation of four aspects: quality of activities, staff attitude, venue and
environment, and facilities and equipment. Therefore, we constructs a theoretical model describing
residents’ recognition of CBP (see Figure 1).

                       Demographical participation
                         variables demand
                                                               Motivation intensity
Distance to the urban Alternative choice
                          areas
                                                                                  Approval

                      Quality of activities

                        Staff attitude
                                            Satisfaction Quality of supply
