over mean. Taking time factor into consideration, compared with articles in the whole dataset in
latest 3 months, altmetrics score of Weiboed articles were on average higher than that of 86.08% of
all the articles and 15.42 times over mean. Taking journal factor into consideration, compared with
articles in the same journal, altmetrics score of Weiboed articles were on average higher than that
W3
of 82.39% of all the articles, and 19.41 times over M i . When taking both time and journal factors
into consideration, altmetrics score of Weiboed articles were on average higher than that of 70.86%

other articles and 22.36 times over M i .
Figure 8 showed lines of 8 data series. For each line of each data series, data were ranked from
highest to lowest, the horizontal axis represented the sequential number of each data point, primary
vertical axis represented T, the times altmetrics score of Weiboed articles over other articles in the
dataset, and secondary vertical axis represented P, the percentage of articles that Weiboed articles

had higher altmetrics score than P. Curves p i , p i , P i and p i all went down gently first and then
rapidly, which meant that majority of P values were at high level. Curves p i and p i that were based

on dataset from the same journal were beneath curves p i and p i that were based on the whole
dataset. This indicated journal was a influencing factor of altmetrics score, and articles from the
W3
W
same journal generally had the same level of altmetrics score. What’s more, p i was beneath p i
which meant time was also influencing factor of altmetris score, and articles of the same period
generally had the same level of altmetrics score. Curves p i and p i possessed irregular shape and

intersected with each other, but generally kept the same trend. This implied that factors influencing
altmetrics score were multidimensional and time definitely was not a decisive influencing factor.
For example, journal was another influencing factor. Observation of T i , T i , T i and T i showed,

except for small portion of fell below 1, all the curves were above 1, namely were better than the
average level. T i and T i that were based on the general dataset had even distribution, which was

specially reflected in that T i was almost a horizontal line. In comparison, T i and T i that were
W3
J3
based on the same journal dataset both had rapid decrease. These demonstrated that altmetrics
score of Weiboed articles were steadily at the rather high level compared with the general dataset,
namely 23.24 times over the mean overall altmetrics score, and 15.42 times over the mean overall
altmetris score in the latest 3 months. While in the same journal, altmetrics score of Weiboed
articles fluctuated in big interval. Table 5 showed that T i could be as high as 258.87 and as low as
J
J3
1.07. Range of T i was even bigger, but 93.86% of Weiboed articles had higher altmetrics score
than other articles of the same journal in latest 3 months.
4 Conclusions and discussions
With statistical analysis of Weibo altmetrics indicator, we revealed several features and principles
of Weibo altmetrics indicator and can draw the following conclusions.
(1) As a matter of fact, Weibo does mention and discuss scientific articles. The coverage,
according to this dataset, is below 1% and much lower than that of Twitter. Although no measure
