two terms are connected. Besides the hidden label “声纳” ,all other terms have Chinese pinyin. On
the concept layer, a narrower concept of “Concept A” is “Concept B” which has label “主动声呐”
(active sonar). “Concept C” labeled as “测距” is related to “Concept A”.

4.2 Core concepts and extended concepts

10% of Chinese thesauri have adopted coordination mechanism to express concepts, i.e. several
concepts are coordinated on some logics to express more special concepts. Concept coordination
generally includes cross-coordination and restrictive coordination. Example 1 and Example 2
demonstrate the cross-coordination. In Example 1, “天平” (Scales) represent a set of various
scales. “电子装置” (Electronic Devices) stand for a set of various electronic devices. “电子天
平”(Electronic Scales) is a combination of the two concepts. Concepts from cross-coordination are
narrower concepts of the participant concepts in cross-coordination. For example, “电子天平” is a
narrower concept of “天平” as well as “电子装置”.

Example 3 and Example 4 exemplify restrictive coordination. In Example 3, “聚合物溶液粘度”
(polymer solution viscosity) is expressed by coordinating “聚合物溶液” (polymer solution) and
“液体粘度” (liquid viscosity). “聚合物溶液粘度” is a narrower concept of “液体粘度”, but not a
narrower concept of “聚合物溶液”. “聚合物溶液” plays a role in restricting “液体粘度”.
