In thesauri, there is a kind of concepts, which are led to other more special concepts through
relations. This kind of concepts usually covers a wide range of denotation. As shown by Example
               5. “化学药品” (chemicals) is a general concept, which is not effective if used directly in
information retrieval, and thus is led to more special concepts “螯合剂” (chelating agents), “去垢
剂” (detergents), “染料”(dyes), and so on.
                   Example 5
                   化学药品
                   chemicals
                   (见专指化合物或化合物的各类,例如“CARCINOGENS” “DETERGENTS” “PLASTICIZERS”和
                 “ORGANIC COMPOUNDS”。)
                   J 螯合剂
                   H去垢剂
                   H 染料
                   H 石化产品
                   H 添加剂
                   H 无机化合物
                   H 显影剂
                   H 有机化合物
                   H 指示剂
Note: Excerpted from Nuclear Scientific and Technical Thesaurus (核科学技术叙词表) (2006)
In traditional thesauri, special concepts from coordination, and excessive general concepts, are
treated as non-preferred terms. Because in traditional thesauri, “term” and “concept” are integrated,
non-preferred terms are regarded as non-preferred concepts. Hence, the treatment is reasonable.
However, it is necessary to highlight that non-preferred terms, which have one-to-multiple
relationships with other concepts, are essentially some special concepts, which are not formally
               included in thesauri.
In the SKOS data model, non-preferred terms are labels, i.e. literal expressions of concepts. It is
obvious that this special kind of non-preferred terms cannot be regarded as labels of concepts in
traditional thesauri. In order to resolve this contradiction, core concepts and extended concepts are
defined in NTW to distinguish concepts expressed by preferred terms and concepts corresponding to
the one-to-multiple non-preferred terms. In traditional thesauri, the non-preferred terms, including
special concepts obtained from coordination, and excessive general concepts that lead to more special
concepts, are regarded as extended concepts. Concepts expressed by preferred terms are core concepts.
Extended concepts also have their own term labels. However, extended concepts are not
interconnected. The one-to-multiple relationships between extended concepts and core concepts
have different forming reasons. Thus, during treatment, it is necessary to distinguish different
situations to transform relationships to either hierarchical relationship or association relationship.
