intersection of disciplines and serving national economic and social development. Specifically, it
shall strive to develop archival theories for various purposes, including the archival value theory
for the new era, the pillar theories of archival science suited to national conditions, the digital
humanities theory for cultural rejuvenation, the archival information theory for the digital era,
the archival governance theory for the governance of the new era, and the electronic records
management theory in view of the Long-Range Objectives through the Year 2035.
3.1 Archival value theory for the new era
The development of archival value theory with Chinese characteristics in the new era shall focus
on the political value and the cultural value.
(1) Highlighting the political value of the basic theories of archival science
Archival science with Chinese characteristics is the embodiment of the theory of socialism with
Chinese characteristics in the field of archival science in the new era. The political value of the
basic theoretical system of archival science lies in the following aspects: 1) serving governance of
the new era; 2) promoting the theoretical research on and exploring the value of the Revolutionary
Archives; 3) promoting the cross-straits academic integration of archival science and speeding
up the process of psychological bonding for the great rejuvenation; 4) promoting national unity,
academic integration of ethnic archival science and the prosperity and stability of ethnic minorities;
and 5) practising the ideas of serving the public with archives.
It should be noted that deepening the integration and development of the cross-straits and
strengthening people-people and cultural exchanges have become an important part of the national
development plan. The most important embodiment of the political value of archives in the new era
is promoting the academic integration of cross-straits archival science, national unity and national
rejuvenation.
(2) Inheriting the cultural value of the basic theories of archival science
Archival science with Chinese characteristics provides important basis for in-depth understanding
of the Chinese civilization. To inherit the cultural value of the basic theories of archival science,
it is necessary to improve the theories on the archival history and archival preservation in China,
and at the same time, in the context of the new liberal arts, promote the integration of theories on
archival science, historical science, ethnology, literature and art. Specifically, efforts can be made
in the following areas. First, further explore the cultural value of physical archives on folk custom
in China. For example, China’s silk has a history of five thousand years, with numerous world
renowned brands of brocade products which are representative of Chinese traditional culture. The
discipline of archival science can integrate the featured collections of archives represented by the
Archives of Suzhou Silk and carry out characteristic theoretical research. Second, further explore
the cultural value of archives on Chinese languages and characters, and focus on the relationship
between ancient poetry and the basic theories of archival science. Third, further explore the cultural
