CAI Yingchun / Digital humanities evaluation: discipline, professionalism and technicality 149
of traditional humanities only by relying on modern technology and digital humanities tools and
methods to dig out all kinds of knowledge and associations within and beyond text, as well as
emotional factors expressed through text. At present, the technologies widely used in the field
of digital humanities mainly involve text analysis (word frequency, co-occurrence, association,
vector, probability), cluster classification, theme analysis, content mining, geographical spatial
[16]
analysis, social network analysis, and so on . Whether these technologies are selected reasonably
and used scientifically is an important factor of evaluation, mainly depending on whether they
meet the actual needs of research, rather than being used mechanically.
(2) Digital technology. The use of digital technology in traditional humanities enables it
to achieve dynamic and knowledge correlation, marking that “data + algorithm + computing
power” is becoming one of the main means for humans to cope with uncertainty. Traditional
humanities must embrace digital technology to improve the accuracy and scientificity of their
[17]
research . The main digital processing technologies currently used in digital humanities include
scanning, shooting, sampling, capturing, graphic design, 3D modeling and the like. Evaluation
can be conducted from the perspectives of the pertinence, rationality, effectiveness of technology
selection, as well as the professionalism and proficiency of application.
(3) Technical standardization. The technology of digital humanities is diverse and heterogeneous,
and it is necessary to unify and standardize it in research as much as possible. Therefore, it is
necessary to evaluate the practice of data standardization, interface standardization, application
standardization, and so on, and continuously explore and achieve technical standardization in the
evaluation.
3 The role of the library, information and archives field in the development
and evaluation of digital humanities
3.1 Utilizing its professionalism to promote the development of digital humanities
The field of the library, information and archives should utilize their professional advantages to
promote the development and innovation of digital humanities. Firstly, institutions and disciplines
such as the library, information and archives field continue to provide data infrastructure for digital
humanities research, together with ideas, theories and methods for humanities and social science
data analysis. Secondly, the potential of talents in humanities and social sciences in the library,
information and archives field should be explored. We should also help interdisciplinary talents of
the field to devote to humanities and social sciences research by making advantages of resources
and data and produce new ideas and theories of humanities research in the library, information and
archives. Thirdly, we should cooperate with humanities and social sciences departments in both
universities and research institutes to jointly promote ideological and theoretical innovation in
humanities, enabling experts and scholars in the field of humanities and social sciences to accept
